The World of René

I just recently came to a realization: Our lives I dominated by screens and monitors. Just think 10-15 years back and life was different. Yeah, you might’ve been working in an office in front of a PC, but you were not really as “plugged in” as you are today.

Heres what I’m talking about: I get up in the morning and check my iPhone (screen) for new emails, the weather and the stock market. In the car on my way to work I use a navigation system (screen). At work, I sit in front of two monitors (screens) when I’m at my desk or I use my laptop (screen) when I’m in meetings. During lunch I surf the web on my iPhone (screen) for latest news. Coming home from work, I end up working on my laptop at night (screen) while at the same time watching TV (screen). My wife might do the same, so while we’re in the same room, our minds are far away in different universes. At least we don’t have a refrigerator with built-in TV yet or a car with DVD / entertainment system.

Nonetheless, adding all this all up, I’d say I spend the majority of my waking hours in front of some kind of screen. When I walk around the office, everyone who’s not in a conference room quietly stares at one or multiple screens like mindless souls plugged into some universal matrix who’s controlling their minds.

In the “old days”, wasn’t life different, more offline and unplugged? I vaguely remember that people networked without LinkedIn, Facebook or Plaxo.

Anyways, I’m just saying... Oops, gotta run, I got news coming in on my RSS feed...
